A charming Victorian cast iron umbrella stand in the form of a fisherman, retaining traces of its original hand-painted polychrome finish.

The figure stands holding his catch over one shoulder and is surrounded by maritime motifs including rope and anchor details. A circular iron ring forms the umbrella support while the cast tray at the base collects water from umbrellas, making it both a practical and decorative hallway piece.

The underside of the base carries a cast mark reading “N-B / MADE”, suggesting manufacture by a North British foundry during the late 19th or early 20th century, a period when decorative cast iron hallway stands were popular in Victorian homes.

Heavy and well cast, the piece shows the natural wear and patina expected of age, with areas of paint loss adding to its character and authenticity.

A wonderful and unusual piece for a hallway, boot room or country house interior.
